Variability of the Lagrangian turbulent diffusion in the lower stratosphere
نویسنده
چکیده
Ozone and nitrous oxide are measured at high spatial and temporal resolution by instruments flying on the ER2 NASA research aircraft. Comparing the airborne transects to reconstructions by ensemble of diffusive backward trajectories allows estimation of the average vertical Lagrangian turbulent diffusion experienced by the air parcels. The resulting estimates show large Lagrangian diffusion of the order of 0.1 m2 s−1in the surf zone outside the polar vortex and smaller values of the order of 0.01 m2 s−1 inside. Locally, large variation of Lagrangian diffusion occurs over mesoscale distances. It is found that high temporal resolution (3 h or less) is required for off-line transport calculations and that the reconstructions are sensitive to spurious motion in standard analysed winds.

متن کاملDirect Numerical Simulation of the Wake Flow Behind a Cylinder Using Random Vortex Method in Medium to High Reynolds Numbers
Direct numerical simulation of turbulent flow behind a cylinder, wake flow, using the random vortex method for an incompressible fluid in two dimensions is presented. In the random vortex method, the primary variable is vorticity of the flow field. After generation on the cylinder wall, it is followed in two fractional time step in a Lagrangian system of coordinates, namely convection and diffu...

متن کاملVertical diffusivity in the lower stratosphere from Lagrangian back-trajectory reconstructions of ozone profiles
We present a simple stochastic-dynamical approach to estimate the turbulent vertical diffusivity (D) in the lower stratosphere from routinely observed ozone profiles. First, an observed ozone profile is reconstructed using three-dimensional back-trajectories obtained from analyzed winds and initializing the trajectories with ozone values from the output of a chemistry-transport model. Assuming ...
متن کاملSeasonal and inter-annual variability of lower stratospheric age of air spectra
Abstract. Trace gas transport in the lower stratosphere is investigated by analysing seasonal and inter-annual variations of the age of air spectrum – the probability distribution of stratospheric transit times. Age spectra are obtained using the Lagrangian transport model CLaMS driven by ERA-Interim winds and total diabatic heating rates, and using a time-evolving boundary-impulse-response (BI...
